To Dos until 11/4
Your tasks: 1 Observe, 2 research, 3 pitch.
1 ) Discover your environment! Go outside, find any public space (the park, a square, the bench (at the bus stop / the road),… ) in your surrounding and observe J
Describe the place and document your perceptions (pictures are very welcome)!
Questions you could ask yourself:
Who uses the place? What people / groups do you see (age, gender, sports group, demonstration, families,…)?
Is there a dominant group? Depending on time of day?
Is it easy to get there? Is the place (easy) accessible? Are there limitations / restrictions? (ex.g. (city) center, steps / stairs, partly accessible (depending on hour of day / or just parts of ex.g. the park are accessible) , ban for consummation of alcoholic drinks at a square; the need of permission from the city / the district to use the space? …)
Are there forms of appropriations? Is it possible for the user to take part in the production of space? (Temporary) appropriations could be: demos, market, events, basketball, stickers,…)
Democratic aspects of a public space: is it possible to live interests / culture at this place?
2) Desk-Research! Find 2 sources (article, podcast, study,….), summarize the most important aspects and let us know your thoughts about it!
Keywords could be: Public space, Democracy and Participation in Communities,
Commons, Common space, Community engagement, Community assets / resources, Urban design, Shared space
You can also link these aspects with your knowledge / expertise / field of interest!
Please document these 2 tasks in your portfolio and hand it in before 11/4 via unicampus.
You will also have a Pitch on your results at our Session 3!
Have fun and let us know if something is unclear for you / you need support to get started.
Best,
Marina and Lena
